Can State of the Union save Trump’s record-low immigration approval rating?

President Donald Trump‘s approval rating on immigration has fallen to an all-time low. The Washington Examiner asked members of Congress ahead of the State of the Union what Trump can say to the public to restore their confidence in this administration’s policies.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI)

“The border is secure. American families are not going to have to worry about their children being raped, robbed, and murdered by criminal illegal aliens because Donald Trump closed the border and he’s deporting these criminals.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)

“I think you remind them of some of the crazy policies of the left. Like this sanctuary jurisdiction policy, this idea that right now in almost a third of the country lives in a jurisdiction where local left wing political people have told law enforcement not to work with federal law enforcement, and that creates this environment that led to the tragic situations in Minneapolis.”

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA)

“I think he needs to remind people about where we were just two years ago. Record and rampant illegal immigration into the country, empowering the cartels. Look at what the cartels just did in Mexico. The cartels are dangerous military operatives. They are a terrorist organization, and the cartels were making billions of dollars off of human suffering at our southern border.”

Hinson continued: “We didn’t need new legislation, we needed a new president to help make sure we were following through on our laws. That’s what the American people voted for, and they also voted for making sure we’re getting these dangerous illegal immigrants out of our communities. He needs to take tonight to remind people of all the work that’s been done in the last year to do that to make America safer.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY)

“You don’t read about the gang members and the foreign criminals that were wreaking havoc on our streets every single day in cities like mine in New York City. You don’t read about that anymore because Trump is deporting them, and that’s exactly what the people wanted.”

Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-OK)

“I think that talking about what former, past presidents have done when it comes to immigration and deportation in particular is helpful. People don’t remember that President Obama deported over 3 million illegals out of the country, and President Trump is trying to do the same thing. Highlighting the fact that this is not an unusual process. It’s been done before. He is just continuing his campaign promises will be important.”
