A new Marist poll finds President Obama’s job approval rating holding steadyish at 53 percent. But there is trouble among the independents — 47 percent said they disapprove of the job he’s doing, to 45 percent who said they approve. Notes Marist pollsters:
In Marist’s August survey, 47 percent of Independents approved of his performance while 37 percent thought Mr. Obama could be doing a better job. That August survey marked the first time the president did not receive support from a majority of Independents since taking office.
The Marist results track earlier polls from Gallup, which found Obama’s support among independent voters eroding, and more independents veering off toward the Republican Party. The Gallup poll echoed an even earlier Washington Post/ABC News poll. By contrast a year ago, the Obama was all the rage among independent voters, who liked his economic plans better than John McCain’s.
A big worry for the Democratic Party is where those mercurial independent voters, estimated at about 40 percent of the electorate, will be a year from now, with midterm elections coming up and the economy (hopefully) on the mend.
