Would you trust a Democrat to build a bridge?

Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) became possibly the first Democratic politician in history to admit that Democrats have a “results” problem, not a “messaging” problem. And then, he set out to prove himself right.

Maryland has canceled a construction contract for its rebuilding project of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The rebuilding project has already surged from $1.8 billion to $5.2 billion, and this new setback will push the rebuilding completion deeper into the future. This means the rebuild is currently frozen just before the actual rebuilding part of the project, which Moore promised would be finished by 2028.

The signs were everywhere that the bridge rebuild would be burdensome in Democrat-run Maryland. It took 16 months for the controlled demolition of the remainder of the bridge after the initial collapse — an unbearable lag in the rebuilding process. Maryland has been relying on diversity requirements in handing out contracts for the rebuilding efforts. The highest estimate in the initial budget projection was under $2 billion, which is now the low end of the current estimate.

As it turns out, Wes Moore has proven himself right: “Democrats don’t have a messaging problem. We have a results problem.”

This has been the story of Democratic politics for years now. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is chief among those touting that Democrats have a messaging problem, so much so that he is prepared to use $19 million in California taxpayer dollars to run a national ad campaign focused on telling people that California isn’t so bad. His results speak for themselves, from the fleeing population to the failing high-speed rail to the constant budget deficits.

Aside from the governmental failures at the state level, this has been a constant for Democrats at the national level as well. Then-President Joe Biden allowed scores of illegal immigrants to cross the border, creating the worst border crisis the country had ever seen. He thought the issue was a messaging one, so he and his administration simply asserted that there was no crisis, expecting that to solve voter concerns. When inflation ran rampant, Biden’s team told everyone that things were going very well. Biden focused on the messaging, and voters punished Democrats for the results.

Democrats seem to assume that reality is biased toward them and that the only reason voters could turn against their perfect policies is a failure of messaging. As Wes Moore said, the real reason Democrats lose elections is that the party can never deliver when called upon. He was even kind enough to provide an example of his point.
