Keeping Republicans’ Senate majority is the ‘highest priority’ in 2026: Byron York

Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said maintaining the Republicans’ majority in the Senate is the “absolute highest priority” in the upcoming midterm elections.

York highlighted that political experts predict Republicans will lose their majority in the House of Representatives, but it would be a “disaster” if the same happened in the Senate.

“The Senate, on the other hand, would be a disaster losing the Senate for Republicans because of appointments,” York said on Fox News’s Ingraham Angle Monday. “Not just the possibility of a Supreme Court or other court appointments, but keeping people in his own Cabinet would have to get confirmed in a Democratic Senate.”

Democrats are looking to flip the Senate seats in North Carolina, Maine, Michigan, Texas, and Ohio, while also maintaining their current seats in states such as Georgia.

York predicted that if Democrats take back the House, they will impeach President Donald Trump.

York said Trump could “deal with” Republicans losing control of the House but not the Senate for this reason, arguing that it would be a “nightmare” for Republicans.

“I find it hard to believe that a Democratic Senate would approve any high court appointment from Donald Trump,” York said. “So keeping the Senate in Republicans’ hands is the absolute highest priority for Republicans.”
