Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) launched a program providing free diapers for all new parents, making California the first state in the United States to do so.
“Every baby born in California deserves a healthy start in life – and that means making sure parents have the basics they need from day one,” Newsom said in a press release Friday.

The state is partnering with Baby2Baby, a California nonprofit organization, to provide every newborn delivered at participating California state hospitals with 400 diapers, free of charge.
The release said this new effort is called “Golden State Start,” and Baby2Baby diapers will be co-labeled with that name. The program also partners with CalRX to challenge growing diaper costs and keep prices down.
The program is expected to start this summer, and for the first year, will prioritize low-income families at Medi-Cal hospitals. Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, provides free or low-cost healthcare.
“Together with Baby2Baby, we can ease the financial burden on California parents while supporting healthier outcomes for babies and their mothers,” first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom said.
