On This Day: The Continental Congress calls for a 10,000-man strategic reserve to protect the middle colonies

May 29, 1776

After conferring for days with the Second Continental Congress, Gen. George Washington urged a congressional committee formed during this meeting in Philadelphia to examine two urgent matters. Canada needs reinforcement, and New York must prepare for a massive attack from the British. What is their solution?  A 10,000-man strategic reserve to protect the middle colonies.

Congress resolved “that an animated address be published to impress the minds of the people with the necessity of their now stepping forward to save their country, their freedom, and property.”
