As Texas lifts most of its pandemic measures, allowing a majority of businesses to reopen at full capacity next week, several major firms will still require employees to wear masks at work, including Target and Macy’s.
Workers at General Motors, Toyota Motor, Target, and Macy’s in the Lone Star State will maintain face-covering protocols at work, the companies announced Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Gov. Greg Abbott’s Tuesday announcement, effective next week, lifts all mask requirements statewide and forbids local jurisdictions from penalizing residents for not wearing a face covering. The governor cited the state’s abundance of testing facilities, personal protective gear, and vaccinations as primary drivers behind his decision.
Target said customers and staff will still be required to wear masks while inside the store, according to a company spokesman.

Department store Macy’s said its mask policy requiring customers and employees to wear face covers would not change.
GM has nearly 13,500 employees in Texas and said the company plans to keep mask measures in place despite the governor’s order.
“We’ll keep our COVID-19 safety protocols in place to ensure we continue to protect our employees,” GM spokesman Patrick Morrissey said.
Toyota employs nearly 7,000 workers in Texas and also said its mask rule would not change at this time.
“The early read is – no change for us,” Toyota spokesman Scott Vazin said.
