Democrats’ ‘Pearl Harbor’ maneuver will not work

Re: “Pelosi aide says Democratic congressional leaders have settled on legislative ‘trick’ to pass Obamacare,” Feb. 10

Mark Tapscott reveals a “Pearl Harbor” healthcare overhaul strategy on the political radar screen: President Obama convenes peace talks with Republicans while Congressional Democrats deploy the “reconciliation” maneuver to neutralize GOP opposition, pass the radical Senate bill, and sink any hopes of bipartisan reform. The last-ditch sneak attack comes after conventional bribes and kickbacks have failed, including closed-door deals with Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry, campaign-funding union bosses, the marginalized American Medical Association, and holdout Senators Mary “Louisiana Purchase” Landrieu and Nebraska’s Ben “Cornhusker Kickback” Nelson. Polls and elections clearly show that the American people want Congress to rein-in its radical reinvention of healthcare and focus on jobs. Whether or not their sneak attack succeeds, the president and his party have wakened a sleeping giant and will rue their subterfuge in November.

Proper language usage is no longer taught

Re: “Black opportunity destruction,” Feb. 12

Walter E. Williams has an advantage when he disparages the improper use of English by black students – for two reasons. First, he is an excellent example of someone who lived through, and has thrived from, a time when teachers corrected the improper use of the English language. Today, teachers fear “reprimand, termination, and possibly assault” if they dare to practice basic teaching skills. Secondly, Mr. Williams himself is black. A person of any other ethnicity who said the same thing would be called a racist, with no attention paid to the merits of the argument and no intelligent discourse offered. Throughout my career, I have interviewed hundreds of people with a wide range of skills for jobs. Applicants are routinely passed over due solely to their lack of verbal skills. When qualifications are comparable, the ability (and willingness) to speak properly is often the tiebreaker.

Stop dumping on the mayor

Re: “Mayor Fenty fails the snow test,” Editorial, Feb. 11

This is an idiotic editorial unencumbered by facts. I hold no brief for Mayor Fenty, but his handling of the most epic snowstorm to batter the Washington D.C. metropolitan area is every bit as competent as those of his peers in the neighboring jurisdictions of suburban Maryland and Virginia.
