The Toledo Police Department said Saturday evening that at least 12 people have been shot after officers responded to a report near a community street festival.

Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Hefferman said it appeared two people “were probably shooting at each other” and two people are in critical condition. He said the ages of the victims range from 14 to 61.

The department is currently following up on leads and asked the public to “expect a significant police presence as officers continue their search and investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident” in its initial statement. No suspects have been identified.

“This tragedy is really weighing heavily on both the residents and those who visit and enjoy this festival year after year,” said Theresa Morris, a city councilwoman for District 6. She had originally reported that at least eight people had been shot.

Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) said on social media that he is deeply concerned about the situation, and that “summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence.”

The shooting occurred at approximately 5:37 p.m.

“Fran and I are praying for everyone impacted by the incident at the Old West End Festival, and we are confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved in this senseless crime,” DeWine said.
