DEA launches surprise probe of NFL drug practices

Drug Enforcement Agents have conducted “surprise inspections” of National Football League team medical staffs, looking for evidence of prescription drug abuse.

The move by the DEA, which worked in coordination with the Transportation Security Administration, is part of a probe into whether NFL teams are illegally distributing prescription drugs to keep players on the field, the Washington Post reported Sunday.

According to the Post, the surprise inspections targeted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers.

The Post obtained the information from a law enforcement officials who spoke anonymously.

According to the official, the probe is league-wide and includes possible distribution of drugs without prescription labels and trainers distributing the drugs, both of which are illegal.
