Newt Gingrich picked up the backing of one of his former 2012 rivals to become Donald Trump’s running mate.
“I would pick Newt Gingrich because Newt Gingrich can be an attack dog and he is also a smart dog,” former 2012 presidential candidate Herman Cain told a “Fox & Friends” panel Wednesday morning.
Cain was given the choice between Gingrich and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. Trump appeared at a rally in Indianapolis on Tuesday night with Pence, and many expect Pence to be picked by Trump.
But according to Cain, the former House Speaker “has the unique perspective of having been an insider and an outsider.”
Gingrich can “connect with the American people,” which is the “smart dog part.”
“Attack dog part, he is so knowledgeable of both domestic and international issues, he can attack people with the facts instead of just with erroneous statements like Hillary Clinton is doing,” Cain added. “That’s why I think Newt is uniquely qualified to serve both of those roles and he could do them very effectively.”
Cain said that he was not surprised that Trump is leading or tied with Clinton in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, per a new Quinnipiac University poll released early Wednesday.
“And that’s because Donald Trump’s substance is finally starting to cut through some of the media clutter and Hillary Clinton’s shallowness is also starting to emerge. She is the free-stuff candidate disguised as wanting to help people, but that’s not coming through. But Donald Trump’s substance is what’s finally starting to emerge,” Cain explained.
Gingrich, who confirmed he is being vetted to be Trump’s vice presidential pick, predicted Tuesday night the presumed GOP nominee will make his selection on either Wednesday or Thursday.
According to a report Tuesday night, Trump will showcase his vice presidential pick at a public event on Friday.
