A man was shot and killed by police officers Tuesday morning in Northwest Washington after allegedly killing a woman in a domestic incident.

The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the call around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the Glover Park neighborhood. They found the woman with gunshot wounds near Wisconsin Avenue and Upton Street. The woman died at the scene, according to authorities.

Witnesses gave authorities a description of the suspect and said he boarded a Metrobus. Authorities identified the suspect and evacuated the bus at Porter Street. The man reached into his bag and pulled out a firearm when two officers approached him, according to interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll. The officers shot the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the man has been arrested multiple times, including on domestic violence-related charges. The suspect and victim were in a domestic relationship.

The 3600 block through the 4000 block of the street in the Tenleytown area has been shut down, according to the MPD. The shooting occurred close to Sidwell Friends School, a private school that serves students ages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

The road closures have caused residual delays due to detours in Washington’s transit system for the bus lines that run along Wisconsin Avenue.
