Dozens of people were injured after a bus crashed into a building in Baltimore County on Wednesday, according to Maryland authorities.

Twenty-eight people were injured in the incident, which occurred in Pikesville, the Baltimore County Fire Department said, declaring a second-alarm mass casualty incident around 6 p.m. and requesting a shock trauma team and medevac helicopter for emergency response. Fifteen ambulances arrived at the scene.

The Maryland Transit Administration bus, which is part of Baltimore City’s transportation system, appeared to crash into a FedEx location. Authorities said the bus and seven other vehicles were involved, including one car that rolled over. Footage from the scene indicated several vehicles sustained heavy damage.

Two people were initially trapped in their cars during the incident before being rescued. One was in critical condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The incident took place in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville, spanning several blocks between Old Court Road and McHenry Avenue. Some businesses along Reisterstown Road were damaged, and several power lines were knocked down.

“The span of this being from Old Court all the way down, you can see the vehicles in the roadway,” Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon said during a press conference. “It’s more like a war scene.”

Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) weighed in on the situation in a post to X.

“We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors,” he said. “We’ve been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground.”

Baltimore County police say Reisterstown Road is closed in both directions between Old Court Road and McHenry Avenue due to the crash.
