‘Very exciting’: Trump boasts about fireworks returning to Mount Rushmore for July Fourth

President Trump bragged he would be bringing fireworks back to the Independence Day celebration in South Dakota after the practice was stopped a decade ago.

“You also are going to have a very exciting Fourth of July,” Trump told South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Monday, adding that the state had “ended the fireworks” on Mount Rushmore and promising to make sure they come back.

“Nobody knows why, but you just couldn’t have it, and now you’re going to have fireworks,” the president said. “We worked it out.”

The president’s comments come months after Noem announced the fireworks would be returning. The United States Department of the Interior and South Dakota reached an agreement in May to allow fireworks on Mount Rushmore for the 2020 Fourth of July celebration.

Mount Rushmore has not had fireworks shot over it since 2009, when it was determined to be a fire hazard. Firework advancements and forest renewal after a pine beetle epidemic led officials to agree on allowing fireworks next year.
