Sanders questions Trump’s billionaire status

Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders questioned Donald Trump’s net worth on the campaign trail in New Mexico on Friday.

Sanders included Trump in a screed against wealthy Republicans who Sanders said were attempting to rule the country by an oligarchy.

“Here’s how crazy the situation is: Donald Trump himself at least claims to be a billionaire. We don’t know, but he probably is,” Sanders said. “He is getting help from a multi-billionaire named Sheldon Adelson. So when you have multi-billionaires supporting other billionaires to be elected president that is not democracy, that is oligarchy.”

Trump has drawn scrutiny for months about his net worth, but has refused to release his tax returns, which could help verify his unsubstantiated claims of his own value. Trump previously told ABC News, “It’s none of your business” what his tax rate is.

Sanders campaigned in New Mexico ahead of the state’s June 7 primary.
