Trump returns to California as Newsom feud escalates ahead of 2028

Published Updated

President Donald Trump returns to California on Tuesday for the first time in more than a year, breathing fresh life into one of the country’s fiercest political rivalries as he and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) renewed their battle over the economy, immigration, crime, and competing visions for the future of the Golden State.

Trump will attend a Republican National Committee dinner Tuesday evening at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles before traveling to Las Vegas on Wednesday, where he is expected to tout his administration’s economic record. His visit to California revives a yearslong political feud that has evolved beyond California, with both men increasingly using each other as stand-ins for the national fight between Republicans and Democrats.
