Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., used her campaign trail debut on Monday to deliver her full-throated support for Hillary Clinton, even though she was the last female Democratic senator to publicly support Clinton.
“I’m here today because I’m with her. Yes, her,” Warren said in Cincinnati, as the overflow capacity crowd cheered for over two straight minutes.
The progressive senator waited until the very end of the primary process to endorse Clinton, but in the three weeks since has become a vocal supporter of the former secretary of state and is already being vetted as Clinton’s possible running mate.
Warren has also become known for her aggressive attacks against Donald Trump, and on Monday, she called him “a small, insecure, money grubber who fights for no one but himself,” and “a nasty man who will never become president of the United States.”
“When Donald Trump says great, I say great who exactly?” Warren asked. “For families who don’t fly to Scotland to play golf? When Donald Trump says ‘Make America Great’ he means he’ll make America even greater, for rich guys just like Donald Trump.”
“Watch out, [Trump] will crush you in to the dirt to get whatever he wants,” she added.
Warren touted both her and Clinton’s commitments to progressive policy plans such as furthering unions, expanding Social Security and lowering the cost of education. Those comments could help Clinton reach out to disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporters, who hoped to see a more liberal Democrat running for the White House.
The Massachusetts senator also noted that both she and Clinton came from working class beginnings, her as the daughter of a maintenance man and Clinton as a granddaughter of a factory worker. Warren noted that she “made it to the United States Senate” and predicted Clinton will “make it all the way to the White House!”
Clinton welcomed Warren’s late appearance on the campaign trail with open arms, by declaring that “no one works harder” than Warren in the fight for progressive ideals. The presumptive Democratic nominee doted on her potential vice president, telling the crowds that “some of the best TV since Elizabeth came in to office has been on CSPAN,” as Warren takes on Wall Street executives.
“You just saw why she is considered so terrific, so formidable. Because she tells it like it is,” Clinton said. “I am very grateful for that introduction, but more importantly I want to thank her for fighting every single days for fighting for families like hers, families like yours, and millions of hardworking Americans who need more folks on their side.”
“She exposes [Trump] for what he is. Temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be president of the United States,” she added.
Clinton’s campaign isn’t expected to reveal her vice presidential pick until the Democratic Convention in July. In a recent interview, Clinton said she would be open to an all-female Democratic ticket, heightening speculation that Warren would be her running mate.
Other Democrats currently being vetted include Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, among others.
