Navy assistance for U.S. ships in Strait ends

The U.S. Navy stopped accompanying U.S. or British-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz Tuesday, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The initial mission, which tasked the U.S. destroyer USS Farragut and U.S. three coastal patrol ships to monitor the passage of U.S. or British-flagged ships through the Strait, was determined to no longer be necessary after several days passed without incident, the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon did not know how many total ships it assisted through the Strait in the last few days. The decision was made last week to accompany the ships after Iran, which borders the Strait, seized a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel late last month.

Iran is still holding the Maersk Tigris cargo ship in Iranian waters in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has expressed that it will release the vessel when its financial obligations are resolved.
