DNC apologizes to Sanders campaign for emails

The Democratic National Committee officially apologized to the Bernie Sanders campaign for leaked emails that showed favoritism toward Hillary Clinton during the primaries.

“On behalf of everyone at the DNC, we want to offer a deep and sincere apology to Senator Sanders, his supporters, and the entire Democratic Party for the inexcusable remarks made over email,” incoming interim DNC chair Donna Brazile and other party leaders wrote on Monday.

She added, “These comments do not reflect the values of the DNC or our steadfast commitment to neutrality during the nominating process. The DNC does not — and will not — tolerate disrespectful language exhibited toward our candidates. Individual staffers have also rightfully apologized for their comments, and the DNC is taking appropriate action to ensure it never happens again.”

The emails showed outgoing DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz calling Sanders’ campaign manager an “a—” and a “liar,” staffers plotting narratives against Sanders, complaints that Sanders isn’t a real Democrat and attempts to use Sanders’ religious beliefs against him in the Appalachia primaries.

Because of the email dump, Wasserman Schultz said she will step down from her post after the convention in Philadelphia this week. The Florida congresswoman has yet to release an official apology.

Sanders supporters booed Wasserman Schultz at a Florida delegation breakfast on Monday morning, and California delegates chanted, “Lock her up!” at their state breakfast. At a gathering of Sanders delegates Monday afternoon, supporters booed the Vermont senator when he asked them to unify around Hillary Clinton.
