Trump considering Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green for Army secretary

The Trump administration is strongly considering Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green for Army secretary after President Trump’s pick backed out nearly six weeks ago.

The White House is expected to make a decision about Green soon, according to a report by the Tennessean on Wednesday. If selected, the gubernatorial candidate would have to put his state political ambitions on hold, though the payout, for a much bigger position on the federal level, would be an upgrade even from governor.

It’s unknown whether the Clarksville, Tenn., resident plans to meet with Trump on Wednesday afternoon while the commander in chief stops through Nashville to commemorate the 250th birthday of former President Andrew Jackson.

The 52-year-old physician has served three tours overseas and later created AlignMD, an emergency room management firm. He joined the state Senate in early 2013.

Green and Vincent Viola, Trump’s previous nomination, both graduated from West Point. Viola withdrew his name for the position on March 2, citing an inability to separate his private financial investments from his work as a government official.
