Washington Monument to reopen after three-day shutdown

The Washington Monument will reopen Tuesday morning following a three-day shutdown for repairs to the obelisk’s 550-foot elevator.

Last week’s elevator breakdown was due to a faulty chip in the elevator control board, according to an email from National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst.

Technicians have replaced and reprogrammed the elevator with a new chip, but did not say whether that would prevent similar breakdowns in the near future.

The monument elevator has broken down multiple times in recent months. In April, the elevator broke down twice in one week. Both times, tourists inside the monument at the time had to walk down the 896 stairs.
