Report: Gray campaign took illegal cash contributions

Mayor Vince Gray’s campaign finance records reportedly show several instances when the campaign accepted cash donations above the legal limit.

D.C. campaign finance laws limit cash donations at $25, but not money orders. The Washington Post’s review of the records found cases in which cash donations above the $25 limit appear to have been turned into money orders by campaign workers. In other cases, donations appear to have been made under people’s names who say they didn’t provide cash to the campaign.

Gray said his campaign was “truncated” and “chaotic,” requiring him to trust people to get their jobs done without his direct involvement.
