Off-duty officer shot at Home Depot

An off-duty D.C. police officer was shot Monday while working security at Home Depot in the District, police said.

The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. during a struggle at the hardware store at 901 Rhode Island Ave. NE.

Police said a customer bit the officer several times before the officer’s gun went off in the scuffle.

The bullet appeared to have grazed the officer’s elbow, D.C. police spokeswoman Tisha Gant said. The officer was taken to the hospital, and the suspect was in custody.

Police investigate rape at senior center

An 86-year-old woman living at the Churchill Senior Living Center in Germantown was raped this weekend, Montgomery County police said.

Police said a man entered the facility through an unlocked window sometime before 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

The woman was in bed at the time of the attack. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male, 18 to 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall. Police said he has a thin build and no facial hair and was wearing black jeans at the time of the assault.

DUI charge in crash that killed pedestrian

A Herndon man has been charged in a crash that killed a pedestrian Friday night.

Matthew D. Souza, 23, allegedly struck and killed Michael C. Cozad, 61, near Sudley Road and Coverstone Drive in Manassas, police said Monday. Souza has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash for both the driver and the pedestrian.

Man accused of using ax to kill brother

An Allegany County man was charged with using an ax to kill his brother.

Mark Collins, 42, was charged in the slaying of William Collins, 46, who was found dead on a couch in a trailer the brothers shared.

According to court records, Mark Collins had been committed to a mental institution in 2004 after he was charged with arson. He was released in 2006.
