Michael Cohen, a former longtime lawyer to President Trump, is offering new information to Democrats in an effort to delay his prison sentence.
Cohen, who is set to begin his three-year prison sentence May 6, said through his attorney Lanny Davis on Thursday that he “recently obtained” a hard drive with 14 million files from his computers and phones from the past 10 years, “which we believe has significant value to the various congressional oversight and investigation committees.”
“For him to surrender in 30 days would be a detriment to [sic] committees search for truth, as well as a miscarriage of justice,” a statement from Davis said.
Cohen’s attorneys sent a letter to members of the House Oversight and Intelligence committees informing them of the discovery. The letter said the hard drive contains emails, voice recordings, images, and attachments from Cohen’s devices.
“Mr. Cohen has only had the time to go through less than 1 percent of the drive, or approximately 3,500 files. Mr. Cohen needs time, resources, and assistance to separate out privileged and personal documents from these 14 million files to make the rest available for review by various congressional committees that have sought his help,” the letter said.
Trump’s former fixer has testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee, House Intelligence Committee, and House Oversight Committee.
Cohen was originally set to report to prison on March 6, but a federal judge granted him a 60-day reprieve to allow him time to testify to Congress and recover from shoulder surgery.
He pleaded guilty in December to a handful of crimes, including bank fraud, lying to Congress, and illegal campaign contributions.
