Biden says GOP governor of Massachusetts ‘a decent guy’

Joe Biden once again called a prominent Republican a “decent guy.” This time, it was Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker.

Biden, 76, had previously walked back comments referring to Vice President Mike Pence as a “decent guy” after receiving backlash from some in his party. But Wednesday he used the same phrase to refer to another, albeit more moderate, Republican politician.

“You got a governor — and I’m not going to get in your politics — who is a decent guy. But the rest of the guys down there are afraid to take this guy on,” Biden said, according to a Washington Post report. “But guess what: The way you deal with that and unify the country is you expose what’s happening.”

Liberal activist and actress Cynthia Nixon was among those who had criticized Biden for his remarks about Pence, citing Pence’s views on the LGBT community. Biden ended up responding to her over Twitter saying that “there is nothing decent about being anti-LGBTQ rights, and that includes the Vice President.”

The former vice president is currently the front-runner in a crowded field of candidates vying for the Democratic nomination. A RealClearPolitics national average of polls has the former vice president at 34.8% support. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is polling second, with 17% support.
