Pence hedges on easing Russia sanctions, saying it ‘depends’

The Trump administration plans to spend the next few months determining whether the United States should roll back sanctions on Russia so that both countries can work more closely to defeat the Islamic State terror organization, Vice President Mike Pence said Sunday.

Pence declined to give a definitive answer on whether the administration plans to preserve existing sanctions against Russia that were put into place following Moscow’s violations of the cease-fire in Ukraine.

“That’s a question that will be answered in the months ahead,” the vice president told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

“It just simply all depends,” he added.

The Treasury Department issued a general license earlier this week that scaled back sanctions on a Russian intelligence agency that had been targeted by the Obama administration in the waning days of his presidency, even as a handful of Republican lawmakers continue to press President Trump for stronger sanctions against the Kremlin.
