Wyoming governor announces plan to combat Biden’s vaccine mandate

The governor of Wyoming announced on Wednesday that he would be fighting against President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate, calling it an “egregious example of federal government overreach.”

Gov. Mark Gordon said that his plan to fight against the mandate would be made up of two parts. The first campaign would involve Wyoming Attorney General Bridget Hill preparing for legal action to stop the mandate for private employers. The second campaign would involve a limited session of the state’s Legislature to cover bills aimed at addressing the vaccine mandate’s overreach.

Gordon said that the Legislature meeting could happen as early as October.

“This is not a fire, ready, aim moment,” Gordon said in his announcement. “We must be smart, thoughtful, and effective in the way we respond to these overreaching efforts by the Biden Administration. Responding prematurely is not in the best interests of Wyoming’s citizens or employers.”

Gordon said that while he is vaccinated himself and believes that the vaccine is safe and effective, he understands why others feel differently. The mandate that Biden has enacted, as Gordon described, is “counterproductive and will not convince anyone otherwise.”

Biden announced the vaccine mandate on Sept. 9, requiring companies with more than 100 workers to either require employees get vaccinated or get tested for COVID-19 weekly. The announcement was criticized by the GOP, including House Republicans and former Vice President Mike Pence.

Wyoming is not the first Republican state to object and threaten to take action against the mandate. At least a dozen Republican governors have condemned the mandate, with many vowing to file a lawsuit against it.
