District police make arrest in connection to Dec. 2009 homicide

D.C. police have arrested 18-year-old Kendrick Phillips for first-degree murder in connection with the December 2009 homicide of 16-year-old Deyonte Payton.

On Tues., December 22, 2009, Payton was found in an apartment in the 3000 block of Stanton Road, SE, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Man charged with animal cruelty for killing kitten

A man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly killing a 3-month-old kitten with a broom.

Ronnie Melson, 30, was arrested about a month after he allegedly struck the kitten, named Tyra, in the head after the animal did not get off the couch, according to the Washington Humane Society.

The blow cracked the kitten’s skull.

The incident happened at the Southwest Washington home of one of Melson’s friends, the Humane Society said.

2 arrested in connection to Southeast D.C. slaying

Two men have been arrested in connection with a fatal attack on another man in Southeast Washington.

Timothy Shade, 25, and Deshawn Johnson, 19, are charged with second-degree murder in the Aug. 30 slaying of Bernard Lewis, 31, of Suitland.

Police said Lewis suffered blunt-force trauma to the head and was unconscious when he was transported to an area hospital at about 6:30 a.m. He died the next day.

The slaying occurred on the 1500 block of S Street Southeast, police said. They have not identified a motive in the killing.
