New maps for Virginia’s 140 legislative districts have been signed, sealed and shipped. But lawmakers are scheduled to trudge back to Richmond to hash out new lines for the state’s 11 congressional districts on June 9.
Members are being advised to prepare for a two-day stay or longer.
The House of Delegates last month approved a map that largely protects all 11 members of the state’s congressional delegation, currently comprised of eight Republicans and three Democrats.
Meanwhile, the Senate has crafted its own map that would create a new “minority influence” district by decreasing the black voting population in Rep. Bobby Scott’s 3rd District and boosting it in Republican Rep. Randy Forbes’ 4th District in southeastern Virginia.
