Drivers, beware: Roads around Washington’s famous landmarks will be closed Sunday for the Nation’s Triathlon and the 9/12 Taxpayer March.
Some roads will be closed starting Saturday at 11 a.m. as preparation for the triathlon begins. However, a majority of the closures will begin as early as 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The major closures include the Memorial Bridge, Clara Barton Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway, Ohio Drive around Hains Point and Independence Avenue.
Meanwhile, Metro is planning maintenance on four of its five rail lines — Red, Yellow, Blue and Green — so riders should expect delays.
Sizeable crowds are expected at both events. The Nation’s Triathlon — which begins and ends at West Potomac Park — is estimating 5,300 competitors and 10,000 spectators. FreedomWorks is expecting tens of thousands to attend the rally throughout the day.
“The logistics of Sunday are complex, but we have been working hard to make sure everyone knows what’s going on,” said Jennifer Devlin, spokeswoman for the Nation’s Triathlon. “We have a number of electronic message boards warning people about the closing, and have posted the streets that will be unavailable online.”
Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th Street will be closed from the Washington Monument to the Capitol Sunday morning to accommodate the taxpayer march, with the roads expected to reopen around 2 p.m.
Following the march, sponsored by FreedomWorks, speakers and performers will be featured on the west lawn of the Capitol until 5 p.m.
