District residents will now need to pay up to get city-issued trash and recycling containers.
Starting Monday, new 32-gallon trash containers and 32-gallon recycling carts will cost $45 each, according to a Department of Public Works statement. Previously, new homeowners could get one of each for free.
Those containers are used in neighborhoods where trash is collected twice a week. DPW will continue to charge $62.50 for new Supercans, the containers used in areas where trash is picked up once a week.
The fee on the 32-gallon cans is being put in place for budget reasons and to let the city replenish its supplies, the department said.
The department said containers requested by midnight Sunday, before the change goes into effect, would be provided for free. People can request cans through the department’s website, dpw.dc.gov, or by calling 311.
