Newly minted ambassadors Pierre Vimont, of France, and Nigel Sheinwald, of the United Kingdom, got their first taste of a major Washington diplomatic event on Friday, as each hosted a dinner at their residences prior to the 39th Annual Meridian International Center Ball.

Thirty-two other diplomatic residences also hosted dinners for a bevy of VIPs, including Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn., AOL Founder Jim Kimsey, Tucker Carlson, Mayor Adrian Fenty and Michelle Fenty, and Justices Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Despite heavy rain, the event was the most successful in Meridian’s history, bringing in $900,000 for the center’s mission to strengthen American ties to the world.
