When first lady Michelle Obama stepped into Jason Wu’s one-shoulder white chiffon, crystalline inaugural gown 10 months ago, the designer was plucked out of obscurity and onto high-fashion runways.
On Thursday night, Wu came back to the city that launched his career, holding his first D.C. trunk show at the Neiman Marcus in Mazza Gallerie.
“It’s very encouraging to see that the collection is doing very well here,” Wu said. “We’re almost sold out of the fall collection already.”
The 27-year-old Taipei native unveiled his fall and spring collections to Washington women whom he considers to be “very savvy and very fashionable.”
“I think women here are very excited about fashion here and I think that’s great,” Wu said.
Wu’s collection speaks to the sensibility but verve of Washingtonian women with simple cuts blanketed with vibrant hues and intricate embroidery. Pieces from his fall and spring collections displayed the radiance of his line: Including an A-line, cap-sleeved Kelly green frock beaded around the neckline and a fuchsia dress with a bateau neckline and bell skirt embroidered with tulips.
As for Mrs. O, Wu said he has yet to meet his great muse, but remains busy expanding his fall line.
