AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is calling on the state legislature to give district attorneys and his own office more authority to go after drag queens and facilitators of sexualized drag shows that target children.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner less than three weeks ahead of his bid for a third term, Paxton doubled down on the criminal punishment that he believes LGBT performers should face for lewd acts demonstrated in front of children.
“I think the [district attorneys] ought to use whatever powers they have [to prosecute],” Paxton said in a phone call Thursday. “I also think the legislature ought to be more specific. … I think they ought to give more power and more ability to [the district attorneys] or me. … I don’t have a lot of confidence in some of our local district attorneys here, especially the ones in the more liberal counties.”
One such incident in which Paxton said the performer should be charged was a show in Plano, Texas, last weekend that was open to attendees of all ages.

The performer simulated a sexual act while lyrics from a song, “My p***y good, p***y sweet, p***y good enough to eat. … F*** me all night,'” played in the background.
The performer danced up to a child, and the performer’s underwear was flashed for all to see.

Conservatives have turned up the heat on certain social issues over the past year, including protecting minors from being exposed to sexual topics and gender issues.
In June, state Rep. Bryan Slaton (R-TX) said he would propose legislation banning people from hosting such shows if anyone under 18 years of age was present.
