Samantha Schrum is really starting to like Sundays.
That is the one day she can avoid the delivery of U.S. postal mail, and take a break from sorting through countless letters from Division I colleges such as Virginia Tech and Duke.
“I got over 20 letters in the mail, and coaches would call me every week to see if I was interested in playing for them,” Schrum said. “I was nervous at times, because I didn?t know who would call next. Eventually, things died down and got back to normal.”
Schrum, a senior midfielder for St. Mary?s High, can return to a natural state, as the lacrosse standout has committed to play lacrosse at Johns Hopkins in the 2006-07 academic year.
Schrum on Hopkins: “I chose Johns Hopkins because it provides a complete package to the student-athlete,” she said. “The university?s challenging academic program will prepare me for my future career. As a student-athlete, I will be coached by dynamic female coaches in a quality Division I lacrosse program.”
Schrum, who transferred from Chesapeake to St. Mary?s two years ago, led St. Mary?s with 78 goals and 27 assists last year. She played a vital role as a junior in the Saints winning the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A conference title with a 7-6 victory over Severn.
“You can use me pretty much anywhere on the field, defense, attack, midfield,” said Schrum, whose older sister, Maria, played lacrosse at Chesapeake. “It was really exciting, because I had never won a championship since I started playing in fourth grade.”
St. Mary?s girls lacrosse coach Sue Chittim is also aware of Schrum?s relentless ability to wiggle through defenders on the field.
“Sam is absolutely unbeatable on the field and she can shred through defenders as if they weren?t even there,” Chittim said. “She will make an easy transition to college because she is the consummate team player with a tremendous work ethic.”
