Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley took to the airwaves Tuesday and offered contrasting opinions that reflected their party affiliations on the battle in Wisconsin over public sector employees’ right to collective bargaining.
On WTOP radio, the Republican McDonnell said he supported Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s anti-union push, touting Virginia’s right-to-work status as an attraction to lure businesses to the state.
But O’Malley, a Democrat, differed.
“I think when a governor uses this crisis to go directly after the right of workers to unite in a union, I think that’s going beyond what we would define as virtues in leadership in Maryland,” he said.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, also on the program, agreed with O’Malley and said that he supports unions’ rights.
