McAuliffe: Virginia is for gay lovers

Virginia, which way back in 1969 opened its tourism gate to “lovers” with its odd “Virginia is for lovers” motto, is applying an updated tweak under Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

From now on, he wants Virginia to be for straight — and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lovers.

In a bid to boost tourism to the Old Dominion, McAuliffe on Monday announced the creation of an “LGBT Tourism Task Force” to promote Virginia as an “LGBT-friendly destination.”

In a statement, he said, “Tourism plays an important role in attaining that goal, building communities, and helping drive the new Virginia economy. We have an opportunity to build upon the progress Virginia made this year in achieving marriage equality and ensure that visitors across the globe know that the commonwealth is open and welcoming to all. Not only will this task force focus on showcasing Virginia as an LGBT friendly destination, it will also work to maximize tourism growth in Virginia with all communities, nationally and internationally.”

It is unclear exactly what elements of Virginia plan to promote as LGBT destinations. The state is well known as the capital of the confederacy, and home to the Shenandoah Valley and Jamestown.

A search of the state tourism website turned up just one LGBT event, the annual Hampton Roads PRIDEfest.
