The top transportation leaders of Maryland, Virginia and the District have agreed to review Metro’s board of directors annually, the latest step in continuing reforms of the transit agency.
The state transportation secretaries and the District’s transportation director signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday. It calls for an annual review of the board, with each jurisdiction committing to work together when making appointments to balance the make-up of the 16-seat board.
It also calls for Metro’s general manager and board chair to meet with the governors and mayor annually, as they did on Friday.
State leaders have been seeking term limits, specific qualifications and required attendance from those who serve on the transit agency’s board. The reforms stem from the problems undercovered in the wake of the 2009 Fort Totten crash and the deaths of four track workers in three separate accidents.
