The Texas Democrats never had a strategy

Texas Democrats are starting to realize that running away from your problems doesn’t make them go away. In fact, it tends to multiply them. Politico’s latest report outlines just a few of the new problems they now face.

Four Democrats have said that their names were erroneously included in the embarrassing lawsuit filed by their colleagues accusing Texas Republican leaders of violating their constitutional rights. Intraparty feuds have broken out, as four Democrats have since returned to Texas.

This comes after a few earlier embarrassments, as when the runaway Democrats brought a COVID-19 outbreak to Washington with them — naturally, they blamed that on everyone but themselves.

None of this is a big surprise. The Texas Democratic Party’s futility for the last 25 years has been clear to all. The party has almost relied solely on demographic change to carry it in Texas, which predictably led to an embarrassing underperformance in the 2020 election cycle as Hispanic voters turned toward the Republican Party in increasing numbers.

Now, the Texas Supreme Court has overturned a district court ruling that Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan lack the authority to arrest them. A few hours later, Phelan signed 52 civil arrest warrants to bring back the absent members for a special session.

Texas Democrats are living out their own “shaggy dog” story, where they pile up failure after failure on their journey to an inevitable defeat. Their grand achievement will be keeping their fake voter suppression narrative in the news for a couple of extra weeks. They will be rewarded by having to face a Republican-friendly 2022 political environment and explain to Texans why they spent their year palling around with congressional Democrats in Washington, D.C.
