A new poll out Monday shows a stark contrast along racial lines with confidence in the police.
On average, about 57 percent of Americans have confidence in the police, according to the Gallup poll data, which was collected from 2006 to 2014.
The ratings are 61 percent confidence among whites, 57 percent confidence among hispanics and just 34 percent among blacks. Blacks living in urban areas polled at 26 percent.
This poll comes out on the heels of two controversial grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of black men — the first in Ferguson, Mo., and the second in Staten Island, N.Y.
The divide in confidence in the police is also seen down party lines. Republicans poll at 69 percent confidence in the police while Independents and Democrats both poll at 52 percent.
