Biologist’s fatal walk remains unsolved

Cynthia Renae Rodgers was a 27-year-old biologist studying to become a doctor when she was found beaten and strangled on a footpath in Forestville. Rodgers’ slaying remains unsolved, and Prince George’s County police are still looking for her killer. Authorities are hoping that someone with information about Rodgers’ killing will come forward.

Rodgers graduated from Eastern High School in 1979 and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. She returned to the D.C. area, where she enjoyed riding her bike, often to the National Arboretum to look at the birds and flowers.

The last time anyone heard from Rodgers was on Super Bowl Sunday 1989. A family member called her to cancel plans to visit later that afternoon at her Forestville apartment.

Police think Rodgers then walked to a nearby Safeway grocery store, and that’s when she was abducted.

Rodgers didn’t show up for work the next day, and her family started looking for her without any luck.

Five days later, someone walking along a path near Pennsylvania Avenue came across Rodgers’ body and called for help. She was about a mile from her home.

Police said they recovered DNA evidence from the crime scene, and they have had several leads over the years.

Anyone with information about Rodgers’ killing is asked to call Prince George’s County police at 301-772-4925.
