Resistance movement in Myanmar calls for national uprising

The underground group organizing a resistance to Myanmar‘s present military government has called for a national uprising “in every village, town and city,” the group’s acting president, Duwa Lashi La, said Tuesday.

Myanmar has endured unrest since the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, as many who oppose the military rule have taken to the streets to protest, with some serious combat in rural areas and border regions where ethnic minority militias have been clashing with government forces.

Duwa Lashi La has called for a “people’s revolution,” requesting all military personnel and police to join the “people’s defense forces” and cautioned civil servants against going to their offices. His group, the National Unity Government, views itself as a shadow government composed of legislators who were blocked from taking their seats when the military took control in February.

There were no clear signs that the call to action on Tuesday amplified any resistance activity, although some student groups and ethnic armed organizations expressed solidarity with Duwa Lashi La.

The National Unity Government’s stance and views are reflected by many in the country who oppose the military government, though its true power and influence has been difficult to measure. The group controls no territory and does not control any significant, organized military. It has no diplomatic recognition from foreign countries, and many of its leaders are hiding in exile, according to the Associated Press.

Some parts of the resistance movement have established makeshift militia in many areas but operate by performing small-scale guerrilla operations against the military occupation.
