Host of reality show “Project Runway” Tim Gunn said Tuesday that Hillary Clinton’s wardrobe has been looking “very presidential lately.”
Gunn and a few other designers and fashion experts gathered at a National Archives forum Tuesday to examine first lady fashion senses, like those of Michelle Obama, Jaqueline Kennedy and pantsuit aficionado Hillary Clinton, according to USA TODAY.
Gunn praised Michelle Obama for her fashion, labeling it “divine.”
However, he dealt Hillary Clinton a bit of a backhanded compliment, suggesting that the “bar” on her style — which as first lady consisted of scrunchies and those infamous pantsuits — “has been raised.” He was careful not to compliment Clinton’s style like he did Obama’s.
He described Clinton’s look as “very presidential lately.”
“There’s definitely an evolution that’s been taking place,” said Gunn. “The bar has been raised.”
Well, that’s quite an improvement over Gunn’s Clinton critique back in 2011.
“Why must she dress that way?” Gunn had told George Lopez on an episode of “Lopez Tonight.” “I think she’s confused about her gender. All these big baggy menswear tailored pantsuits.”
Accomplished designer Tracy Reese dealt some more direct insults to Clinton’s fashion sense and general appearance during Tuesday’s panel discussion.
“I just feel like it’s not important to her,” Reese explained. “Public service is very important, but her appearance is down on the list.”
Likewise, Valerie Steele, who serves as director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, summed Hillary’s first lady look up rather succinctly as “the famous pantsuit and the hair problems.”
Too bad Heidi Klum wasn’t present, because she likely would have told Clinton and her scrunchie, “Auf wiedersehen.”
