Video game streaming platform Twitch gets hacked and user data is leaked

Twitch, the popular video game streaming platform owned by Amazon, said Wednesday it was hacked and user data was leaked on the online chat forum 4chan in an attempt to hurt the tech company.

The hacker argued Twitch had problematic, harmful content and behaved anti-competitively in the gaming industry, which is why they went after the platform.

“Their community is also a disgusting toxic cesspool, so to foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space, we have completely pwned them,” the hacker, who allegedly posted Twitch data, wrote on 4chan. “Find out how much your favorite streamer is really making!”

The hacker said the user data dump on 4chan was only the first of more stolen data that could come.

Twitch confirmed its data had been hacked.

“We can confirm a breach has taken place. Our teams are working with urgency to understand the extent of this,” the company wrote on Twitter.

Amazon bought Twitch in 2014 for approximately $970 million, and the website has an average of more than 2.5 million viewers of video games at any time, according to the company’s data. That’s is more than the number of viewers of many prime-time cable news shows.
