Third suspect charged with councilman’s murder

Baltimore police arrested a third suspect Friday afternoon in connection with the murder of former City Councilman Kenneth Harris Sr.

Jerome Williams, 16, of Baltimore was arrested at the city’s juvenile booking facility, where he was being held on charges stemming from a robbery on Jan. 5 in the Northeast district.

Police said a DNA match on evidence found at the crime scene helped, along with a witness who said a person known as “Little Country” was involved in Harris’ murder lead to the arrest.

Williams has been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and robbery.

Williams is the third person charged in the high-profile killing of the popular former city councilman, who was gunned down during a robbery in front of popular Northeast Baltimore jazz club on the night of Sept. 20.

Two other suspects, Gary Collins and Charles McGaney, pleaded not guilty to murder charges last week.

On Thursday, prosecutors revealed that DNA on the mask found along the escape route taken by Harris’ killers did not match either of the suspects previously charged.

The mask had been at the center of the police investigation into Harris’ Sept. 20 killing during a robbery at Haven Lounge in northeast Baltimore — and was mentioned publicly by Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld during the search for the suspects.

But the DNA of neither Charles McGaney, 19, nor Gary Collins, 20 — the two men previously charged in the case — was found on the mask, according to a police laboratory report. Instead, the DNA of two unknown males was located on the mask.

“My client pleaded not guilty, and we look forward to proving his innocence in court,” attorney Maureen Rowland, who represents McGaney, said Thursday. “A lot of the information released about my client is inaccurate.”
