Web a-Twitter after Cuccinelli bin Laden post

Update: Cuccinelli follows up to clarify: “It seems some were confused by my earlier tweet. Read it closely:…72 Virginians… (Not a typo, ie, people who live in Virginia…)”

Not to quibble, but it was still a typo…

Many politicians in Virginia and around the country have weighed in on the death of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, but a Wednesday tweet from Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has raised a few eyebrows on the interwebs.

“How much would I give to be one of the 72 Virginans Osama is ‘hanging out’ with since Sunday?” Cuccinelli tweeted early Wednesday.

Spokesman Brian Gottstein said in an email that Cuccinelli’s fingers missed the “i” on his phone, and it was supposed to be Virginians. And he definitely didn’t intend to type 72 “virgins,” the presumptive award awaiting Islamic “martyrs” in heaven.

“It’s a play on words,” Gottstein wrote. “He would like to be one of the 72 angry Virginians that got to ‘greet’ bin Laden,” adding that this appears to be the original joke to which Cuccinelli was referring.

Chalk up some more press for Cuccinelli, who just can’t seem to stay out of the news
