Despite his declining poll numbers in New Hampshire, Ohio Gov. John Kasich sought to assuage any concerns about his recent performance during a Q&A with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.
The governor boasted that he had the best campaign infrastructure in the Granite State and compared stumping in New Hampshire to running for Congress, noting that “organizations win.”
The governor has spent much of his time on the campaign trail thus far in the “Live Free or Die” state, and fell from among the top three GOP candidates in New Hampshire to behind six in the newest NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey of Granite State voters.
Kasich is up slightly to eighth place in the Washington Examiner‘s latest power rankings.
“If you build a stage and it has no scaffolding, the stage can collapse,” Kasich said. “We’ve seen that a few places thus far.”
Kasich insisted he would avoid a sudden collapse on the campaign trail and pushed back against the notion the he belongs to the GOP establishment during his visit to Washington, D.C.
“When did I ever become establishment?” he said. “From the time I got into politics all the way through the day, no one has more consistently shaken up the status quo more than I have. … I know how to get it done.”
Kasich, who moved up to eighth in the most recent Washington Examiner power rankings, has spent the week campaigning in the D.C. metropolitan area, and stopped at the University of Richmond in Virginia on Monday. The governor is expected to meet with lawmakers before he leaves town as he looks to gain momentum.
