McDonnell hits back on roads plan

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Tuesday morning hit back at Northern Virginia legislators who are still taking issue with the $4 billion transportation package that overwhelmingly passed the Virginia General Assembly.

On his monthly radio appearance on WNIS Norfolk, McDonnell was asked about Tuesday’s article in The Washington Examiner, in which legislators criticized elements of the package. Fairfax County, notably, has been leery of the plan.

“I’m disappointed with some of the comments,” McDonnell said, noting that the bill passed overwhelmingly in both the House and the Senate. “I’m sorry that a few people are still grumbling.”

And what of the notion, broached by Fairfax supervisor Jeff McKay, that localities in better shape financially may bear more of the burden and have a harder time securing grants from the infrastructure bank that’s part of the plan?

“No – I don’t buy that at all,” McDonnell said. “All they want to do is raise taxes…there’s a handful, particularly House Democrats, that are still complaining.”
