House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday conducted an impromptu swearing-in of House Chaplain Patrick Conroy, a move that which will allow him to remain in his post after Ryan asked him to resign last month.
Father Conroy protested the firing and Ryan, R-Wis., announced he would reinstate the Jesuit priest after meeting with him. Conroy had initially been slated to leave the job on May 24.
“The Chair appointments Father Patrick J. Conroy of the State of Oregon to act as and to exercise temporarily the duties of chaplain of the House of Representatives, effective Friday, May 25, 2018,” Ryan announced.

Ryan said Tuesday that the two have been meeting to discuss efforts to bolster pastoral services for lawmakers. Ryan said some lawmakers had complained about a lack of such services.
After Ryan swore in Father Conroy, several lawmakers in attendance in the chamber stood and clapped.
