A security team surrounding Macron jumped to intervene, pulled the man to the ground, and moved Macron away from him. The French president’s entourage confirmed a man attempted to slap him.
The Elysee Palace also confirmed there had been an attempt to strike Macron but did not elaborate.
Macron was visiting the Drome region to meet with restaurateurs and students to discuss the return to normal ways of living following months of pandemic lockdowns and restrictions.

One of the men was arrested in connection to the assault, and it is not immediately clear what the other man’s charges are.
